Entercom has recruited a pair of digital publishing vets in new executive roles at Radio.com as it prepares to make a strategic shift at the streaming audio platform it acquired last November from CBS Radio.

Pamela Russo, most recently with Meredith Corp., will join as senior VP and general manager on April 30, while Entertainment Weekly executive editor of digital Christopher Rosen comes on board as editorial director.

Entercom says Russo will oversee the Radio.com brand and business, focusing on advertiser and consumer products, client development and revenue growth, content and talent partnerships, distribution strategy, and audience development. Tapping into the company’s radio stations and live events, she’s tasked with developing the streaming service’s brand voice and positioning, while building out its staff to a quickly grow the platform.

State Lawmaker Asks FCC To Revoke St. Louis Station’s License.

A Missouri state lawmaker is calling on the Federal Communications Commission to revoke the license of a St. Louis radio station for racist and offensive comments made by one of its hosts. Sen. Jamilah Nasheed (D-St. Louis) has sent a letter to FCC chair Ajit Pai accusing Entertainment Media Trust classic country/talk KQQZ (1190) of violating the FCC’s rules against obscenity, indecency and profanity.

At issue are comments made by Bob Romanik, host of “Kool Killer Kountry,” who is known for using the n-word and “various misogynistic and homophobic slurs over the years,” according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Romanik made headlines in recent days after Rep. Bob Burns (D-St. Louis County) called into the show and defended the host, triggering a backlash and calls for Burns to resign.

When the power goes out, a $5 transistor radio is more valuable than a $500 smartphone. That is certainly a lesson learned from last September’s Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, which left residents with a single source of information: AM radio. Just how valuable it became is the subject of an in-depth feature in Columbia Journalism Review, titled “After Hurricane Maria, AM radio makes a comeback in Puerto Rico.”

As the hurricane approached last fall, many television stations knew they would lose power and actually shuttered during the storm. Wifi was decimated, leaving “old-fashioned” radio as the single media lifeline. “Maria erased the world of journalism in Puerto Rico,” says Carolina Rodriguez Plaza, production manager for the news team at WORA-TV Mayagüez. “It reemerged in a new form, with radio playing an important role.”

Nielsen Audio:- Brad Kelly Had A ‘Light Bulb Moment’ With Radio.

Radio’s ability to reach more consumers on a weekly basis than TV or smartphones has major brand marketers rediscovering its ability to connect with consumers. Advertisers are having a “light bulb moment” with radio, says Nielsen Audio managing director Brad Kelly in an interview with MediaVillage.

“Now, the pendulum is swinging towards radio and audio as a whole,” Kelly tells journalist Alli Romano, who has covered digital media, radio and broadcast and cable TV for industry publications including Inside Radio, Broadcasting & Cable, TVNewscheck.com and Multichannel News. “Billion-dollar advertisers are re-discovering the power of radio and how it can augment, supplement and amplify their campaigns.”

Close Tribune Buy, Sinclair Will Sell 23 Stations In 18 Markets.

Aiming to appease regulators and accelerate the closing of its $3.9 purchase of Tribune Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group says it will sell 23 TV stations in 18 markets to six different buyers. The spinoffs add seven new markets to the original 11 the company had earmarked for sale back in February.

Tribune Media CEO Peter Kern said Sinclair’s latest move was intended to “pave the way for regulatory approval” of the blockbuster deal.

The buyers include Cunningham Broadcasting, Standard Media Group, Howard Stirk Holdings, Meredith Corp, a company affiliated with the CEO of Maryland-based Atlantic Automotive Corp. and a sixth party that hasn’t been announced.

A Mass Appeal Monoliths AC, Classic Hits Reach New Ratings Peaks.

Christmas brings AC radio a huge cume infusion – the tricky part is trying to retain some of that ratings rocket boost, while luring back listeners that found a new favorite station when the Yule music was playing 24/7. Based on a new analysis of first quarter listening data, AC programmers have cracked the ratings code, delivering the format’s best numbers in seven years.

The usual scenario sees AC fall back to earth after the Holiday book ends and the influx of new listeners tails off. “This year has been different, however, with AC surging to one of its best starts to the year (post-holiday) that we have seen in PPM measurement, particularly with Millennial audiences,” Nielsen says in a new analysis released Wednesday. In fact, in the PPM markets, AC posted its highest first quarter share of 18-34 year-olds in any year since Nielsen began tracking national format trends in 2011.

Latest Edison Study: AM/FM Radio Grabs 50% ‘Share Of Ear’ In.

AM/FM radio continues to dominate a rapidly expanding audio universe in the U.S., accounting for half the time Americans spend listening to audio. AM/FM grabbed a 50% “share of ear” according to new first quarter 2018 data from Edison Research – more than triple that of streaming audio. The new numbers include both AM/FM radio delivered over the air and via online streaming. But broadcast radio receivers are far and away the top device for listening to audio.

Since its inception four years ago, Edison’s quarterly Share Of Ear studies have become the de facto way to stack various audio sources up against one another to see how Americans allocate their audio time. With AM/FM, streaming and podcasts each measured by different measurement providers, using different methodologies, Share Of Ear has emerged as the definite single-source barometer for all things audio.

The CRB/CRS Executive Director Bill Mayne To Step Down Next Year.

After leading the Country Radio Broadcasters/Country Radio Seminar since 2011 as executive director, Bill Mayne will leave his post in May 2019. Mayne will oversee the organization through the 50th Anniversary CRS set for next February and help in the search for his successor. Prior to his position as executive director, Mayne served on the organization’s board of directors.

“It will be the end of an era, really. That’s how much impact Bill has had on country music while at CRB,” CRB board president Kurt Johnson said. “It’s impossible to adequately express our thanks for his extraordinary leadership. And the good news is, Bill is working with the brilliant CRB staff to create a once-in-a-lifetime CRS this coming February.”

A search committee has been established by the CRB board who will oversee the process to find Mayne’s replacement.

SCBA Series will try to educate Radio Sellers about digital.

With digital advertising surpassing television as the richest ad medium, radio sellers need to stay on top of the fast growing digital ad space and how it impacts radio. To help educate the industry, the Southern California Broadcasters Association (SCBA) has published a series of brief essays on all aspects of digital advertising.

The trade group says its new Digital Information Series is designed to assist members in understanding digital and how to position radio and its own digital platforms as “an important and essential partner to clients.” Each installment in the series is devoted to one subject and provides information “to engage and provoke creative thinking” for sellers in their meetings with clients and new prospects.

“The need for our member sales teams to have a solid working knowledge of non-radio digital platforms is critical to radio’s future,” SCBA president Thom Callahan said in a release announcing the series.

A whopping $10 Million were given to Seattle’s KEXP by an anonymous listener

KEXP-FM Seattle (90.5) has received one of the largest ever bequests to an individual public radio station. An anonymous listener, identified only as Suzanne, left nearly $10 million to the trend-setting adult alternative station.

The station says the surprisingly generous donation will be used for a number of music and media education programs, to help fund KEXP’s digital content strategy and to allow the station to expand and experiment with radio and online music programming. Inspired by the donation, KEXP has also created a new planned giving initiative, the Reverb Society.

The donor was celebrated with a special set of programming during KEXP chief content officer Kevin Cole’s afternoon program. “We intend to honor her legacy in every step we take in stewarding these funds,” Cole said. “Suzanne’s love of music, her support for artists, her sense of philanthropy and service to the community, and the joy she found in exploration and disc
