Pravin Gordhan says cash-strapped SAA may have no money for salaries this month

Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has warned that, while two unions at SAA are demanding salary increases for members, the airline might not even be able to pay any salaries at the end of the month.

The minister was speaking at a Parliamentary briefing on Wednesday. The meeting was called for feedback on power utility Eskom, but Gordhan – who met with unions on Tuesday – also made some remarks about SA’s cash-strapped national airline.

The minister said the strike was worsening the airline’s financial crisis. “SAA doesn’t have enough cash to possibly even pay salaries at the end of the month,” he said. “Not only will people not get increases but they might not even get their salaries,” he added.

New white CEO of Eskom not welcomed with open arms – Numsa: ‘De Ruyter’s appointment as Eskom CEO an insult to Africans’

The recent appointment of Andre de Ruyter to the position of Eskom CEO has been met with mixed emotions, particularly by trade unions and fervent supporters of the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) agenda.

Although the African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the appointment of de Ruyter, at a time when Eskom is teetering on the brink of both operational and financial collapse, union allies have been less hospitable.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), which currently has its hands full with a particularly nasty South African Airways (SAA) strike, condemned the appointment of de Ruyter. SAA strike costing R52 million a day and with a bankruptcy record it could mean the end of the entity

More than 3000 workers affiliated with Numsa and Sacca downed tools at SAA on Friday over a wage dispute and plans to cut more than 900 jobs, costing the airline about R52 million a day.

The interim chief financial officer of SAA Deon Fredericks, said the strike was pushing the struggling airline to unsustainable levels. “If this strike continues, we are running the risk of putting SAA out of business,” Fredericks said.

Even though they are working with Mango Airlines to accommodate as many customers travelling on domestic services as possible and refunding passengers their flights or travel with other airlines.

SAA is facing a crippling onslaught by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca). The national air-carrier is threatening the unions with legal action if they fail to retract comments that the safety of passengers cannot be guaranteed.

Warning! SAA Strike will intensify – Talks between National carrier and striking unions collapse

JOHANNESBURG – Talks between South African Airways (SAA) management and striking workers have collapsed.

Union leaders briefed the media and workers after the parties met on Saturday in an attempt to resolve the strike which began on Friday.

Workers are demanding an 8%wage increase while SAA is offering 5.9%.

According to the National Union for Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, unions and the national carrier have failed to find each other.

Numsa and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) have warned they will intensify the strike across all SAA departments.

“If you have workers at the Civil Aviation Authority on strike, it means that none of the planes are going to fly. It’s not just SAA, its all planes”, said Hlubi-Majola.

The struggling state owned airline says its working around the clock to introduce additional capacity on the domestic network.

Death bells are ringing for SAA due to impending strike

The impending strike at SAA by the SA Cabin Staff Association and Numsa could mean the end of the airline. In the meantime, the Pilot Association announced that they supported the idea and that the state entity’s overall top management should be replaced. Furthermore, they threatened to act if a Chief Executive with no experience aviation experience and knowledge are appointed.

The imminent strike comes after SAA announced that a restructuring will take place to make the entity more cost effective. The SAA’s enormous debt burden means that it has no choice but to lay off about 1,000 staff members, but the unions threaten to call a large-scale strike if retrenchments continue.

Persons who will use SAA’s services on Friday 15 November 2019 were advised to make alternative arrangements as all flights for Friday and Saturday were canceled considering the impending strike.

Numsa wants Gordhan’s head over extraordinarily high escalation costs at new failed power stations – according to Gordhan, power stations are “poorly designed and poorly erected”

Trade union Numsa demanded that the Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, be dismissed for the extraordinarily high escalation costs at the Medupi and Kusile power stations.

The construction cost has doubled to almost R292 billion and both power stations are described as “poorly designed and poorly constructed” by Gordhan.

Earlier, it was confirmed that the two power stations did not meet the requirements, and billions of rand would have to be used to rectify the errors.

Numsa members are threatening with a major strike at Kulula airways right before Christmas demanding a salary increase as well as a 13th check

British Airways and Comair met on Thursday with the Commission of Arbitration to prevent a possible strike by Numsa members.

Members of Numsa demands a 13th check, travel allowance and a 12% salary increase. Comair ensures that in the event of a strike, interruptions will be minimized.

Meanwhile, Comair denied accusations of racism by Numsa, which indicates that the trade union’s actions could be another company.

At present, SAL is in the mood that he had to enter into agreements with a foreign airways company because his finances do not allow him to do anything himself.
